Brief History of the Department
The Department of Tourism and Travel Management of Bhattadev University was established in the year 2001-02. Formerly, the Department belonged to Bajali College and when Bajali College has been upgraded to Bhattadev University in August, 2019, and then it automatically entered into this newly established University.
It can't be denied that there is tremendous potential for tourism in the North Eastern Region of India. Realizing this great emphasis has been laid upon the development of tourism industry in Assam. It can rightly be expected that tourism will create both direct and indirect employment in the Coming years in this part of the country. There will be a great demand for professionally qualified man power to serve this industry. Hence a course in Tourism & Travel has become very relevant in Assam now. Therefore Bhattadev University envisaged the introduction of the subject of TTM.
The main objectives of TTM department is to impart basic knowledge & skills of Tourism to students which in turn will help them to get job opportunities or it will atleast offer them opportunities of self employment. The department also intends to create awareness about Tourism & Travel among the masses & to work for promotion of Tourism by holding Tourism awareness camp, special lecture, seminars etc. Though TTM was introduced with the support of UGC, yet TTM Department. of Bhattadev University will make consistent effort to become self sufficient and transform itself into a full fledged department in near future.
Presently, the subject of TTM is under the core Department of History. This new subject seems to have succeeded to attract students since its introduction in 2001. There has been a gradual rise in enrolment in TTM and this year the enrolment figure has touched thirty. (Maximum 110. of students shouldn't exceed 30 as per UGC guideline).
We are planning to introduce short term self financing certificate/diploma courses on Tourism like foundation course on Tourism, Tourist guide, a course on ticketing, office management etc. For smooth conduct and success of this programme we will try establish academic linkage with national tourism educational institutions like. Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management, (II TTM) Gwalior, Institute of Hotel Management, Guwahati and with private Travel Agencies.
