National Cadet Corps (NCC) of India

About NCC

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a tri-services voluntary organization that includes the Army, Navy, and Air Force, functioning under the Ministry of Defence. The Defence Secretary holds overall responsibility for the organization. NCC is dedicated to grooming the youth of the country in discipline, organization, and patriotism. While it provides an encouraging environment for young people to pursue careers in the Armed Forces, there is no obligation for active military service after completing the program. However, NCC cadets do receive preference over regular candidates during selection.

During World War II, the British government formed the 'University Officers Training Corps' in 1942 to develop leadership skills among its members. After India gained independence, this was reorganized into a cadet organization for schools and colleges at the national level, following the recommendations of the H.N. Kunzru Committee. The present-day NCC was established on April 16, 1948, through the XXXI Act of Parliament and was formally inaugurated on July 15, 1948. The Girls' Division of NCC was introduced in 1949, followed by the establishment of the Air Wing in April 1950. With the raising of the Naval Wing in July 1952, all three services were represented within the Corps

Introduction

The NCC unit of Bhattadev University (erstwhile Bajali College) consists of two companies: the 7 Assam NCC Battalion, Dhubri and the 60 Assam NCC Girls' Battalion, Guwahati. The 7 Assam Battalion(SD & SW) NCC, Dhubri and 60 Assam Girls’ Battalion NCC, Guwahati are prestigious units operating under Guwahati Head Quarter of NER NCC Directorate. Known for their dedication to excellence, both the battalion conducts regular training sessions, camps, community services, and adventure sports to groom cadets into responsible and disciplined citizens. The battalions participate actively in Directorate and national-level events, consistently earning accolades for its outstanding performance. The 7 Assam Battalion and 60 Assam Battalion exemplify the core values of NCC, working tirelessly to nurture future leaders and responsible citizens.

The NCC units at Bhattadev University (erstwhile Bajali College) hold a rich legacy of discipline and service. The 7 Assam Battalion NCC unit, one of the oldest, was established in 1965, ten years after the founding of the college, with the motto "Unity and Discipline." This unit has served both the students and the greater Bajali area with distinction. Late Harendra Nath Deka, then Head of the Economics Department, was the first Caretaker Officer (CTO) of the unit. Shortly after his appointment, he completed the mandatory Pre-RCN training and became the first Associated NCC Officer (ANO). Initially affiliated with the 7 Assam Battalion(Army Wing), headquartered in Barpeta town before its relocation to Dhubri, the unit laid a strong foundation for NCC activities at the institution.

Equally significant is the 60 Assam Girls’ Battalion NCC (Army wing), which was established in 1963 under the Headquarter Guwahati. This wing plays a pivotal role in promoting the University’s vision of discipline, leadership, and patriotism. While the Girls’ Wing became inactive a few years after its inception due to unknown reasons, it was successfully revived in 2002 under the dedicated efforts of Dr. Polly Vauquline, Assistant Professor in History. Since its revival, the cadets of this wing have actively engaged in diverse activities and training programs, furthering the University’s commitment to holistic student development and contributing significantly to the unit’s esteemed legacy.
At present the strength of 7 Assam ad 60 Assam Girls’ BN NCC are 73 and 54.
